Sermon theme: Why He Calls Us Sheep
Introduction
Today’s readings remind us once again regarding our spiritual weakness…a weakness which has rendered us incapable of fully living out the life of God Genesis 3:15. From that time until now, God had always reminded us that we have a weakness problem as a result of that fatal fall that has prevented us from being spiritually self-sufficient…
Ezekiel 34:16a I will seek the lost, bring back the scattered, bind up the broken and strengthen the sick…
This is a very serious matter because far too many Christians are living out their faith in a false reality of self-competency. To explain the seriousness of our condition, our Lord Jesus Christ uses an animal that is best known for its weakness and stupidity… SHEEP!
In order to better understand our spiritual condition, let’s look at some of characteristics that sheep have…
-Sheep are not strong animals. Hebrews 4:15
-They are not smart. 1 Corinthians 2:14
-They are unable to find their way back home. Isaiah 53:6a
-If caught in a snare they’ll die there: Ephesians 2:1
Since this is our condition…that is why we need a shepherd. Hebrews 12:2
Here are some things that the parable in today’s gospel suggests to us…
-We are special to God Luke 15:4
-We are lifted by God Luke 15:5
-We are celebrated by God Luke 15:6
